2010 AG Awards: Biggest Surprise

The 2010 AG Awards Day #5: Biggest Surprise

Bucking the trend set by yesterdays award category, Biggest Surprise seeks to highlight the best and most shocking moments of the year, be it Nintendo finally presenting a great E3 conference, Kinect not being complete garbage or the announcement of the 3DS. The 2010 AG Awards roll on!

The AG Nominations:

Anna's Nomination: Lara Croft and the Guardian Of Light

I had given up on any Lara Croft game becoming anything more than average until I played this. It breathed fresh air into the franchise and made me remember why my interest picks up with any mention of the series. There is some great adventure still to be had and while I had resigned these games to the aging cash-cow heap, I ended up enjoying Lara Croft again and hope that they can keep up the quality in the future. I'll probably be disappointed again.

Definitely a pleasant surprise to Tomb Raider fans and newcomers alike, GoL made Lara feel fresh and new all over again.

Cormac’s Nomination: Duke Nukem Forever

Unicorns are real. I’ve seen them. No this game didn’t come out this year but fuck have we ever been given so much to hope on. It’s been so long, so much grief and tasteless jokes that the only way I’ve found to describe this feeling is that it’s as though someone has just told me that Nirvana are reforming. Umm…but didn’t he…? Wait no, there he is, right in front of me. Doing that thing only he can do. That’s him alright. I’m still not sure how I feel about this, but for the moment “Biggest Surprise” is telling enough.

ALWAYS BET ON DUKE

Cav's Nomination: Toy Story 3

Film to game adaptations have an extremely sordid history of being.... well.... utter shit (the Lego games don't really count as a true conversion). Toy Story 3 on the other hand was a real surprise. Not only did it follow the storyline, but also gave us a sandbox style environment, of course named 'toybox', which had me playing for hours on end. With familiar voice talents, with the exception of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, Toy Story 3 feels familiar and comfortable to those familiar with the film series. I do recommend that those of you who have younger people in the house get this game as it will be enjoyed by all. If we were doing a Top 10, personally, this would rate in my top 3, without question. Don't believe me? Check out my review.

Big Pimpin'

Sarge's Nomination: Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever is actually coming out! Everyone had their running jokes that DNF would never come out, but it looks like we can't make those jokes anymore! The cynic in me wants to keep believing that it still won't see the light of day, the fact that it's been resurrected is enough for me to have to double-check the news.
