What is your most memorable gaming experience?
I remember back in 1992, me and my mate Andy were waiting for Street Fighter II to come out on the Super Nintendo. I remember that being the first time I'd ever been truly excited about a video game being released on a console. I remember he got it on the day it came out, which was a Friday night, so we went to his place, put the cartridge in and literally did not stop playing it until we had to go to school again on Monday morning. To this day, it's the longest and most epic gaming sessions I've ever had.
Where would you be found on a typical Friday night?
Usually checking out a live band, or at a local pub with friends drinking way too many pints. Or at a local pub on my own drinking way too many pints. Basically, if there's a place that serves alcohol in a pint glass, I'll be there.
What is your favourite movie?
Pulp Fiction. I was 14 at the time I saw it, and can remember sitting down at a friends house to watch it, and we started watching it purely because it was an R-rated movie, and we heard there was violence and swearing in it. While everyone else in the room giggled and snickered at every f-bomb in the movie, I sat in awe witnessing a cult classic movie in the making. The way the storylines interchanged, and the out of sync style of story-telling, I was blown away.
What is your favourite food?
Anything Mexican. My mum also does a pretty kick-arse lasagne too.
What is your favourite drink?
I'm a bit of a bogan when it comes to my booze. I don't mind a glass of Cab Sav every now and again, but the closest I'll come to drinking a cocktail is putting coke in my whiskey. I am known to be a bit of a beer snob though. My favourite of all the beers is a French-Canadian beer called "La Fin Du Monde" which is French for "The End Of The World". It's made by Unibroue, who really don't make a single bad tasting beer, but this is truly the crowning glory of them all. It's a Belgian-style golden ale with a real kick to it, clocking in at about 9% - so too many of those and it really will be the end of the world for you.
What are your favourite 5 games of all time, and why?
The Legend Of Zelda - The Ocarina Of Time. Cliche, I know, but I lost countless night's sleep trying to finish this game. It was one of the first games that I remember just obsessing over day and night. For months and months, if I wasn't playing OOT, I was thinking about playing OOT and trying to work out what I needed to do next.
Leisure Suit Larry & The Land Of The Lounge Lizards - The very first point and click adventure game I remember completing. I had it on my parent's old 486 that I had to turn on and then reboot again if I wanted to play the game in EGA colours. Trying to get past those questions at the start was annoying, but I eventually learnt to write all the answers down. I learnt a lot about life playing that game, which unfortunately shows.
Bioshock - I know it's a fairly recent game, but it's the only game in the last few years that I remember as being more of an "experience" than just a game. The mechanics itself of the game were nothing new, but the art-direction was beautiful, the side-stories intriguing, and the soundtrack was sublime. And the ending? Amazing. I actually haven't played Bioshock 2, and to this day I refuse to, because everything about that game was perfect on it's own, and I didn't felt it need to be told again.
Def Jam: Fight For New York - One of the best fighting games I've ever played. It's so damn brutal and satisfying and you really feel every hit. Whenever I have a bad day at work, I can go home, turn on the original X-Box, pick up that gigantic controller, and in a few short minutes, all my troubles have gone. Plus, I get to play as one of my all-time heroes, Henry Rollins.
NBA Jam - I'm going to be honest here: if you don't like this game, then I'm not sure you and I can be friends. The number of 20c pieces I'd pumped into the NBA Jam machine at my local video arcade would be close enough for me to retire on. It was the absolute pure definition of arcade fun.
